Toni Letter - August 7 - 10

Sunday, Aug. 7

Hey y'all,
Things have mellowed out a lot. On Mon- Wed we did first aid and that was the most boring thing I've ever done, death by PowerPoint. We use dummies and NPA's and we did partner drags and that was fun!  Thursday we did the obstacle course and it was so fun! You by platoon, 3 people a@ a time: first obstacle was a pole that you have to kind of monkey bar across but it was hard.  Second were tall monkey bars, third was a low crawl through a water pit under a log, then we ran to this rope bridge. After the rope bridge you have to drag your body across a rope over a ditch then run up this huge long hill and jump 3 walls. Then we rope swing across water and bunny hopped over a bunch of logs and then did the tire footwork thing. Then we did a 25 ft rope climb which was impossible because by the time if you get there your legs and arms are shot, after that is a low crawl under barbed wire and a sprint to the finish! We got to pick 2 people from each platoon to compete for a ribbon on our phase banner. We had this girl Wingo and a guy Ngou compete. Wings is our platoon guide, she is super tall, very nice, AMAZING athlete.  She's the most athletic person ever, she can draw and sing as she kills it. They went and demolish the two other teams, like they won by at least 5 minutes. So our platoon (3rd platoon) is the leading platoon, not to mention the best behaved and overall great. People are always asking to switch to our platoon. I lost track of thought too much to write.
Toni dying from first aid powerpoints!
At "Peace" doing the obstacle course.

Monday, Aug. 8

GAS same birthday! So we started off the day with a company run like 2 1/2 miles with sprints halfway through. When I say run I mean RUN, not jog.  I run in B group which is 8:30 mile pace and it's tough but I feel really good afterwards. My knees and my shins hurt so bad! OK side-note, farting is such a normal thing here. People are always ripping um' with no warning -  loud, smelly, in your face, they don't care, LOL.  So it's 3rd week, 53 days left. DS Burgess made me guide on who is the person that marches in front of the company with a blue flag that says our company D CO 1-48.  At first I was really confused because they didn't teach me how but I figured it out. It's also weird to have 200+ people marching behind me! So we march to the gas chamber, my platoon (3rd) was the first to go in.  So I went in first group, last in line and you go into this tiny building with nothing in it but a table. We had our gas masks on and we all line up against the wall. One of the DS was "cooking" the gas (looks like he was cooking meth.)  Your hands start to itch and tingle a little bit but not bad. CBRN and tells you to lift mask above face and say name, rank, and platoon then we steal and clear it. Then we had to take a lap around the room (I was last) and yell the soldiers creed with her mask off and above our heads.  You get to about the second line and your skin starts burning, your eyes water so bad you can't see anything. Snot pours down your face and you just want it to stop, LOL. We ran out into the rubber pit and you just don't know what to do with yourself; running around blind and snotting and you can't breathe. People had bloody noses and stuff. It was horrible for like 5 minutes and then we walk around the pit flapping our arms and the burning went away. Oh yeah, we exercised in there too so when we took our mask off we inhaled everything LOL.

In the Chamber

GAG!!
Flapping her arms trying to make it all go away!

Dear Family,
SEND ME PICTURES! Like 100! Off my Instagram and my wall just send hella pictures please! And send my friends my address!  Thank you guys for all the mail! I love it! Zeke's letter made me cry before I even read it! I am SO proud of you guys for working out every day! I can't wait to see what y'all look like when I graduate! Dad, your letters crack me up because of the formality. Mom, I read every letter in your voice (even the whispers LOL)! I died when I read about Zeke's one arm teacher!! I am so excited and nervous for him to start school! I know Zac left yesterday! It's ALL mental, I'm praying for him. One of the girls here tried to OD and got sent to the psych ward :(  It's not that bad here at all, I stay positive all day. I've only cried like 2X for like 5 seconds. Today I took my first APFT test. I did 23 push-ups, 51 sit-ups and ran my 2 miles in 17:11. Not bad considering I could do only 6 push-ups on my first test!  My knees get worse everyday omg but my drill sergeant says to say, "F**k you knees, get stronger" or "F U head/teeth/arms get stronger" LOL!  I never walk on my runs no matter how bad I wanna quit!  We do land nav tomorrow and next week we go the range!  I'm so excited!  I've made a lot of friends here and I've really only had half a bad day.  Oh I'm getting so many pimples!  Also, I've lost a few lbs!
Please write to my friend PVT CARR, Heather and PVT WILLIAMS, Zoe.  They haven't gotten mail yet!  That's all for now (same address just different name)!
LOVE Y'ALL!
P.S. Don't forget pictures!
**Also enclosed was a letter from PVT Carr to me:

***I know I have asked many of you to write to these friends of Toni who are not receiving any mail.  Thank you for not only being willing but also for doing it.  I am sure they appreciate it!  If you have time, please drop them another line because they are still not getting any mail from family and loved ones. Thank you. ~Kristy

Zac's Letter from Reception - August 13 & 14

8-13-16

Morale is a lot higher now that everyone got a call home. Everyone is in a good mood now. It was awesome of the SG (sergeant) to let us call for a half hour but some dumbasses thought it'd be cool to try & sneak their personal bags into the barracks, others thought it would be cool to steal some phones. I think the saying is "Take an inch, still another privates phone".

This morning was a 0300 wake up with a 1 mile run and one pull up. Most people did the pull up, some couldn't even pull up an inch. I guess the DS's will PT them extensively. I think the privates that couldn't do the pull-ups are struggling mentally. Almost everyone passed the 8:30 (time for the mile run)  I got a 7:57. Good start time I think.

Some privates were maxed out at like 12 minutes, walking the last lap, sucking wind.

None of the staff at work today so the DS stuck us in the auditorium and we had briefings from some outside people. Then they turned on Major Payne and we watched that. I forgot how funny that movie is.

Each day with these dips**ts is quickly eroding my patience. They just won't stop talking. They wouldn't stop during question time so I missed a lot of good info. I don't understand this mentality that their in; they think that because this isn't our actual basic that they don't have to listen. Regardless of the fact that we aren't at actual BCT, these soldiers still out rank everyone of us. I think they deserve obedience. Plus I mean it's common courtesy. These a**holes like to call privates who actually care "Drill privates".  (Example) "Guys let's form up and be quiet." "Ha-ha , whatever drill private."  I can't stand these a**holes.  I guess it's not cool to be disciplined.

Oh well keeping my head down and pressing on.

The ambulance pulled up today cuz a guy tried to kill himself. Not much else about it.  Another kid is just flat out trying to quit. Best part is that he has a tattoo on his right fore arm that says "Pray for my enemies".  I guess he is content on being a loser who quits basic.
I feel like I sound bitter but the lack of common courtesy and wimping out is bad.   No one seems to realize that we are all in this together. Apparently the Puerto Rican recruit and a group of black recruits already have a beef; they almost got in a fight today.  People had to pull them out of each other's faces. All this testosterone is making this a giant p*ssing contest. People are throwing their rank around. Aren't even a soldier and saying crap like "You can't tell me what to do private, I am a Private First Class." Or "I am a PFC or a  SPC you should do what I say".

I have a pretty gnarly hotspot/blister coming in on my foot, still walking/running through it.

8-14-16

3 kids trying to or claimed they wanted to kill themselves last night. One kid drink bleach. One kid had enough and wanted a medical discharge so he hit his arm on the lockers and broke it in half.

I was going to go to church for that picture you wanted but people took too long to eat so I missed it,  sorry, I'll try again next week.

I think I'm down another few pounds. Each night we all do a couple rounds of light PT to help keep us ready.

There's nothing to do today so I'll probably sleep all day, do PT, and study.

I got reserve to ship on Friday so things are still on track. Graduation should be still around November 25. Rumor from Sandhill is that they cut red phase down to a week and two weeks because they have so many soldiers. Guess we will find out.

Love & miss y'all

Zac's First Letter from Reception - Wednesday, August 10, 2016

Wednesday, August 10, 2016

Mom, Dad and Zeke,

My time here at reception has been a sh*t show the entire time. Starting it off, we found out that our reception DS (drill sergeant) is on his last week because he punched a kid last week.

Some kids are considering leaving already. Reception is like a frat house but not as fun. It smells like a bunch of sweaty boys, has zero soap, paper towels, & like 4 rolls of TP.

Rumor is I should ship on Friday, but I guess we will find out. Lights out in 30 min & I haven't showered in two days.

Love you guys,

Zac

Another Letter from the Church, this time it was from Salt Lake City

We received this letter on Monday, August 8th.  This was totally unexpected.  I really feel like the Lord is looking out for my kids, individually.  The whole letter was touching however, I was especially touched by the second paragraph. I am going to make a copy of it and send it to Toni so she has it.

Dear Brother and Sister Prows:

We recently learned that Tonia has joined the military and is attending basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. We are pleased inform you that she has been attending the Church services on base and are grateful for the spirit she brings to the meetings. Kevin Albrecht is the Church leader at Fort Leonard Wood and will do all he can to help strengthen Tonia’s faith and testimony. We appreciate your support I know you join with us and asking that the Lord will guide and protect her during this time of uncertainty and turmoil in the world.

In these troubled times, it is heartwarming to see sons and daughters courageously step forward to help preserve our freedom and way of life. You can be proud of the part you played in molding Tonia’s character. Courage and patriotism do not come automatically; they are planted in the hearts of children by their parents. We express our gratitude to you for your selfless service in her behalf.

We have a deep and abiding interest in Tonia’s welfare and want to ensure the blessings of Church membership are available wherever she is stationed. As military members move around, occasionally they are unable to find out where and when the Church meetings are held.  Our Military Relations Division can assist them.   Likewise, we are able to help concerned parents locate the bishop or branch president where their son or daughter is stationed. In addition, many times we can assist in locating the name of a group leader aboard a ship or at a deployed location around the world.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Military Relations Division at (801) 240-2286 or email them at PST–Military@ldschurch.org. We know that the Lord is mindful Tonia and the challenges she will face as she valiantly serves in the military.

                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                Elder Larry R. Lawrence

Toni Basic Training letter #3 Came with a Picture!

We received this letter last Friday, August 5th along with a letter from church and a picture that was taken at church.  Toni's personal letter made me very teary.  I am just so proud of our girl!

July 24,2016

Dear Mom and Dad,

The first week is finally over! There's only 6 other LDS in my company including me but about 50 overall. Everyone is so friendly here. It makes me super emotional to be in church because it feels so familiar. I miss you guys a lot right now. I can barely see the paper, my eyes are too watery. Most people here are from Utah if you hadn’t already guessed. They gave us a hand held stack of 5 little scripture books. It’s good to know there are at least a few of us here. It can get embarrassing when people ask what LDS is and I have to explain I’m Mormon but I’m excited to be here! There’s even missionaries, cute ones too LOL.  I cried through the entire him Spirit of God. This one hour week is the only thing that feels normal, the only thing that feels like home. I hope Zack goes, it’s worth it. There’s kids here with tattoos and stuff. This is the most emotional I’ve ever been. This wave of happiness just took over me and I can’t stop crying. I love and miss y’all very much. Thank you for raising me this way. It’s very moving to see all the members in uniform here. I really love it. Just in case this comes before my other letters- Happy Birthday Zeke! Aug. 3rd

- Love Toni
